How to Make the Best Cookie Dough
Great cookie dough needs the right texture, moisture content and a balance of sweetness. Our Smarties® cookie dough has all that and more. The dark chocolate and Smarties® come together beautifully with sweet and tasty cocoa flavours. Chilling the dough before baking enhances the texture and helps the cookies bake evenly. The cooling time also gives the Smarties® shells a little protection during baking which helps keep them from melting. It also leaves you with that just-right balance of soft and chewy cookies that are crispy round the edge!
Serving Suggestions
Our Smarties® cookies are great on their own and even better with your favourite beverage. For adults, hot drinks like a latte or a cup of Earl Grey complement the crunchy milk chocolate sweetness of Smarties®. A glass of chilled milk is always refreshing, and if you serve the cookies warm, you get a hot and cold contrast! These tasty cookies also make a great gift and add a splash of colour to every celebration.
How to Store Smarties Cookies
Your vibrant Smarties® cookies are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days. You can also freeze them in the container for up to three months. To defrost, simply leave it in the fridge overnight, or leave at room temperature for 2-3 hours until it is still chilled but ready to roll and bake. For a melty, freshly baked experience, warm a cookie for 15-20 seconds in the microwave before serving.

Method
- Preheat your oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas 4. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
- In a large bowl, combine the buttery baking spread, brown sugar and white sugar. Mix well to combine.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix to combine.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and cocoa powder.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
- Gently fold in the dark chocolate with the edge of a metal tablespoon or a silicone spatula.
- Pop the bowl of dough into the fridge for 30 minutes to 1 hour to chill. This will help prevent the cookies from spreading too much, giving you chunkier cookies!
- Scoop ½ tablespoon-sized dough balls onto the lined baking tray, spacing them about 5cm apart. Aim for 24 cookie balls – see our top tip for getting the perfect shape!
- You will need to bake two batches of 12 cookies each. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden but the centres still look slightly soft.
- While the cookies are still warm, gently press three Smarties® into each cookie.
- Allow to cool on the tray for 5-10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
Top Tips
To help your cookies spread evenly and remain chunky, form them into a ball, then roll them into a slight sausage shape. Place them onto your baking tray standing up on the end of the sausage. The taller height means it takes longer for the cookie to drop as it bakes.
