What Are S’mores?

Originating in the States, S’mores (short for some more) are a simple three-ingredient camping dessert that consists of Graham crackers, milk chocolate and marshmallows. Graham crackers might not be as common here in the UK, but we’ve got some great alternatives like digestives. To make a s'more, you sandwich a toasted marshmallow and chocolate between two biscuits, allowing the heat from the marshmallow to soften the chocolate into a rich, gooey filling.

The Origins of S’mores

S’mores have a long history, dating back to the early 1920s in America. They were first documented in a Girl Scouts handbook, and the recipe hasn’t changed since! Over time, s’mores became synonymous with camping nights spent under the stars. And since the early 1900s, s’mores have made their way across the world and inspired different chocolatey versions wherever they go.

How to Make Classic S’mores

The trick to a great s’more is all in the art of marshmallow melting! The basic method for making a s’more is the same, but here are three options for every situation.

Serving Suggestions & Tips

S’mores are best enjoyed warm, so don’t wait to serve them. As soon as your marshmallow is golden, crispy and squidgy, get it on the chocolate and close up the sandwich. For extra texture and flavour, you can add things like freeze-dried berries, a teaspoon of caramel sauce, or smear a teaspoon of peanut butter in between the biscuits, too. You can also mix up your biscuit selection and use biscoff or chocolate digestives.

Method

Over the campfire

  1. Lay your digestives out within arm’s reach and pop the chocolate onto one of the biscuits.
  2. Stick your marshmallow on a long wooden or metal skewer. Toast it over a bed of glowing coals. You can also toast it over open flames, but be careful not to set the marshmallow alight! Rotate the marshmallow as it toasts until it is golden and soft.
  3. Carefully place the hot marshmallow on top of the chocolate and sandwich it with the second biscuit. Press lightly and let it sit for 10 seconds to melt the chocolate, then devour!

Safety tip: If there are kids involved in the s’more making, adult supervision is imperative. Also remember that hot marshmallows can cause very serious burns!

In the oven

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C/180°C fan/gas 6.
  2. Place one digestive onto a baking tray lined with baking paper, then top with chocolate and marshmallow.
  3. Place the tray into the oven and bake for 4-5 minutes or until the marshmallow is golden.
  4. Remove it from the oven, top with the other biscuit and serve.

Bonus tip: You can also use your oven grill function, but keep an eye on it and do not walk away! The difference between golden and charred marshmallows happens in seconds.

In the air fryer

  1. Place a piece of baking paper into the air fryer basket, then add your biscuit and top with the chocolate and marshmallow.
  2. Replace the basket and set the air fryer to 190°C for 2-3 minutes. Keep an eye on it, and when the marshmallow is golden and soft, it’s ready.
  3. Remove it from the air fryer and top with the other biscuit and serve.
